The "Glitter" star lost her father, Alfred, to cancer. He died on July 4 at his New York home. The singer flew back from the Italian island of Capri last month to be with her dad during the final stages of his illness. "She's grateful that she had a chance to spend these weeks with him," her rep told us. Alfred, an engineer, and his wife, Patricia, a singer, divorced in 1973, when Mariah was 3. Though they were once estranged, in recent years they grew close again. Mariah returned to Capri on Sunday to continue recording her first CD for Universal Music. Her rep said a memorial service is being planned. There wasn't anything really new, but they did bring out Al Sharpton who's supporting Jackson on this feud. He was going on about how Sony and other record companies are racist. One of the interviewers mentioned something to Jackson about him saying Sony was racist, but he said that he didn't think the company was racist, Tommy Mottola was. Mariah wasn't mentioned, except for at the bottom it said how Mottola discovered her and that they married/divorced. Patti Labelle Gives Mariah Tips on Cooking 7.07.02 Mariah Carey may know many things, but she has a lot to learn according to Patti LaBelle. On the MTV program, "Cribs," which gives viewers an exclusive tour through the domestic sanctuaries that some of the fanciest stars call home, LaBelle said, despite her close-nit relationship with the young singer (Carey refers to LaBelle as her godmother), she's inexperienced in one category - cooking. "I'm going to teach her how to cook one day," says LaBelle. "Every night when I cook, I look at her [picture] and I say 'Girlfriend, will you ever learn?'" she jokingly continued. LaBelle, who's likely known more for her soaring voice than her pasta linguine, turns out to be quite a renowned chef herself. The music honcho is pushing for an early contract renewal with the Japanese electronics giant, but talks have stalled industry sources said. Mottola's current contract expires in March, 2004. He's believed to be one of the highest paid music execs in the world, with a salary approaching $10 million. Maggie Comes Back From Vacation 7.02.02 Hi lambs, I am finally back from vacation! Miss me? Hehe, anyways I got some nice stuff for the site plus managed to go to a fan gathering. Tyrese Pays Mariah a Visit 7.02.02 The smooth American R&B singer Tyrese has his eyes set on R&B diva Mariah Carey. Following Mariah Carey's August of 2001 'breakdown' due to exhaustion, she has recently started recording for her new album in Capri. Carey reportedly recruited top producers such as Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, 7 Aurelius, DJ Quik, and Jermaine Dupri. Although she obviously has plenty of company, one special beau stopped by with roses in hand to pay a visit to Mariah. It is unconfirmed whether Tyrese's weekend visit is for recording purposes on Mariah's album or just a 'friendly' visit. Whatever the reason, Tyrese was being his typical, romantic self as sources tell us that the two shared a candlelight dinner alone. Source: MariahBuzz Jimmy Jam on Working on M's Album 6.17.02 Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are among the producers working with Mariah Carey on her Island Def Jam debut that has not yet been scheduled for release. The duo, which has produced for Janet Jackson, Mary J. Blige, and Boyz II Men, among numerous others recently explained the types of songs they are collaborating on with Carey. Jam said the songs they have recorded with Carey so far, are primarily slow-tempo: "The things we're doing with here are very much classic, singer-songwriter type songs, ballads, that really explore the range and the incredible voice that she has. Just letting her be an artist," he noted. "You know, we're co-writing all of the songs with her, co-producing with her, and we've done, I think four or five songs thus far, and we're really happy with all of them. Not sure whether all of them will get used or not, but we're really happy with what we've done thus far. She's very re-energized, very excited, and thus far been a fun project to work on." Jam didn't know, however, whether Carey would address her nervous breakdown last year that resulted in her being hospitalized: "I'm not sure. We haven't dealt with it yet," he said. Mariah Nominated for a Billboad 6.11.02 Mariah Carey's pop-funk hit "Loverboy" has been nominated for a Billboard Music Award in the category of Top R&B/Hip-Hop Single Sales. Her competitors include Destiny's Child's "Bootylicious", Lil Romeo's "My Baby", and Usher's "U Remind Me". Carey's "Loverboy" sold nearly 500,000 copies in its first three weeks of distribution and made Rolling Stone's Best Selling list, coming in at number one. Lil Romeo's "My Baby" also made the list, racking in at number seven, while Destiny's Child's "Bootylicious" didn't make the list. However, the single was big competition for "Loverboy" and even kept it out of Billboard's top slot on the Hot 100. Curiously enough, Usher's "U Remind Me" wasn't released as a commercial CD single, like many other of today's contemporary hits. Presented by Heineken, the awards ceremony will be held Aug. 9 at the Billboardlive venue in Miami Beach, at the close of the three-day Billboard-AURN R&B/Hip-Hop Conference, which is to be hosted at the nearby Eden Roc Resort. The American Urban Radio Networks (AURN) will provide coverage of the conference and the awards ceremony to more than 400 U.S. radio stations.
